Dorothy Martina Sinnett

Dorothy Sinnett (Auntie Dot) was a longtime resident in Seattle, Washington.  She was at home born on Orcas Street in Georgetown, and was a graduate of Holy Rosary in 1943.  She was the baby of 2 older brothers and 4 older sisters.  She never married, but always was at our house to see us kids, and our mom and dad.

She was a night-owl.  Our grandma would always call us at midnight to tell Dorothy to get back home.

Auntie Dot was an entrepreneur.  She owned several apartment houses and also parked cars on the family parking lot for the Coliseum.  She was very dedicated and always seemed to be working 7 days a week!

Auntie Dot was a prankster.  She always wanted to play a trick on someone, but sometimes she would find herself in hot water for doing silly things.  She had always made our families complete.  She would get us out of the house to park cars or to keep her company.  As kids, we loved it.  It always seemed to get me out of cleaning our house.

She had a stroke in the early 90’s and would never be independent again.  But through all those years that she was wheelchair bound, she never complained.  She was always happy to see family or just sitting at her front room window waving to all her friends on California Avenue.  She loved her caregivers Annie, Rose and Naomi.

Even though she needed to depend on someone, she wanted her independence.  She would at times take off in her electric wheelchair, and I would have to go find her.  One time she got stuck in some blackberry bushes.  I think that was the last time I had to hunt her down.

I always kissed her and told her I loved her.  She never said it back to me, but I know she loved me and she loved everyone.  The day she passed, she took a piece of our soul too.  We will never forget her and all the fun times we had.  Until we meet again Auntie Dot, save a warm place for us.

Auntie Dot was preceded by her mom Blanche, her dad John, her brothers Alfred and Kenneth, her sisters Vivian, Ellade, and Edwardine, and her niece, Lisa Louise.  She is survived by her sister, Caroline Jones Longshore, and many nieces and nephews.
