Obituary

With grateful hearts we give thanks for the life of Sally Hill, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was born in 1935 to Mary and Thomas Bryant in Chicago, Illinois. In 1959, she married Eugene Hill and together they established their home in Seattle, Washington and raised their family in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. As the years passed, she became mother of three children and grandmother of four.

She attended school in Chicago, graduating from Wendell Phillips High School, and her extraordinary artistic abilities enabled her to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. She also attended the University of Illinois at Navy Pier (proud 1954 Homecoming Queen) and Roosevelt University. She later earned her Associates Degree in Commercial Arts from Seattle Central Community College.

While in Chicago she worked in retail, at the Automobile Association of America, and was an artist for the Chicago Tribune newspaper. In Seattle, she worked as a stenographer for The Boeing Company, supporting the Boeing 727 design group. A strong believer in educating children, Sally spent most of her career as an art instructor and administrative assistant in the Seattle public school system. There she loved, taught, and nurtured the children whose lives she touched and, in some cases, the children of those children.

Her artistic talents would lead her to paint still life, abstract, and nature scenes in acrylic for friends and family. She made friends easily and for decades was a life-long member of the well-respected Engineers’ Wives Club (a social club for the wives of African American Boeing engineers) and was a member of the Seattle chapter of Jack and Jill. She also travelled extensively in Europe, the Caribbean, and her favorite, Hawaii.

Sally is survived by Gene, her husband, her brother Larry (Jan), her children Jamie (Fred), Bryant (Joanna), Cris (Scott), and several of her beloved grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Walter, Ren, Bob, and Marian, and grandson, Frederick. A private family celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in memory of Sally Hill.

Rest with power, Sally; beloved and remembered always.
